Health and Education
As area director studying health and education, Professor Kelly Bedard engages with UCSB scholars in the areas of health and education. Topics studied include the effects of factors ranging from prenatal influences, to peer groups, to formal schooling, to medical technology and access, on health and education. Key topics under the health umbrella include differences in life course health outcomes across demographic groups, access to health care and its impact on health outcomes, fertility, and the aging process. In a similar vein, all topics related to skill accumulation differences across demographic groups and their impact on economic and personal well-being fall under the education umbrella. And, of course, understanding the many dimensions in which education and health interact to form human capital is also an important endeavor.
